I guess it can be somewhat confusing but it does help explain how on earth the train was so futuristic. In a way, this story takes place prior to that event in the third movie because this story, in part, tells how Doc Brown obtains the technology to make the train work. So this story actually takes place one year later, in 1986. At the end of the third movie, we see Doc and the family arrive in 1985 with a flying train time machine. I want to just explain one "spoiler" that I feel should sort of be mentioned in order for some of this to make sense.
I was so glad to see a long enough story that covered 6 issues because there was so much going on it would not have been fair to tell the story in 4 or even 5 issues like most volumes. So this story actually takes place one year later, in I found this to be very entertaining.
